In recent years, the concept of sustainable living has gained significant traction as people become more aware of the impact of their daily choices on the environment. Whether reducing waste, conserving energy, or supporting ethical practices, individuals can contribute to a more sustainable future in numerous ways. If you’re new to this journey and wondering where to start, here are some practical tips to help you embrace sustainable living. It’s good for you AND it’s good for the planet!
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
One of the fundamental sustainability principles is the mantra: reduce, reuse, recycle. Start by cutting down on single-use plastics and opting for reusable alternatives such as:
Forget the straws or opt for metal or paper
cloth or canvas shopping bags
glass containers vs. plastic
Reusable water bottle
Laundry pods or sheets vs buying plastic laundry detergent bottles
Biodegradable plastic storage bags or pet poo bags
When you do need to dispose of waste, make sure to sort it properly for recycling.
Conserve Water and Energy
Small changes in your daily habits can lead to significant resource conservation. To conserve water, turn off lights and appliances when not in use, use energy-efficient light bulbs, and fix any leaks. Consider installing low-flow faucets and showerheads to reduce water consumption further.
Reuse bath towels more than once.
Turn off the water while brushing your teeth
Turn off the water during showers while shampooing or soaping up
Turn off electronics such as TVs, computers, and entertainment systems when not in use

Choose Sustainable Transportation
Reduce your carbon footprint by opting for eco-friendly transportation options whenever possible.
walk
bike
carpool
public transportation instead of driving alone.
Work remotely, if it's possible.
If you must drive, consider a hybrid or electric vehicle to minimize emissions.
Instead of buying a new car, I bought a used, much smaller car to help reduce my impact on fossil fuel usage. I can work remotely and go through a gas tank in about a month, sometimes longer!

Support Local and Sustainable Products
Make informed choices by supporting local farmers and businesses that prioritize sustainable practices. Look for organic and Fair Trade certifications (3) when shopping for groceries and goods. Choose products with minimal packaging to reduce waste.

Eat a Plant-Based Diet
The food we consume, particularly meat and dairy products, has a significant environmental impact due to the amount of methane gas emitted into our atmosphere.
Methane produced from industrial farming has significantly impacted climate change over the past 20 years, (1) accounting for more than 30% of global warming since its conception in the early 20th century. (2)
Consider incorporating more plant-based meals into your diet to reduce your carbon footprint. Start with Meatless Mondays or explore vegan alternatives for your favorite dishes.
Many vegetarian and vegan influencers have pages on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, sharing multiple healthy, nutritious, plant-based recipes for you to experiment with and enjoy, all you have to do is search for them!
With this method, I became plant-based by trying out some excellent recipes I found on Instagram, and I don’t miss meat one bit!
Embrace Minimalism
Living sustainably also means consuming less. Embrace minimalism by decluttering your space and buying only what you truly need. Opt for quality over quantity when making purchases, and consider borrowing or renting items you don’t use often.
Americans love their “things,” but in the spirit of embracing total minimalism, I’ve learned to downsize my life, going from a 2100 square foot house to a 1200 square foot home.

Educate Yourself and Others
Stay informed about environmental issues and learn about the impact of your choices. Share your knowledge with friends, family, and community members to inspire others to adopt sustainable practices. Small changes collectively make a big difference. If each person made an effort every day to make one significant change or choice, we could all collectively make a huge impact on reversing the effects of climate change on our planet. In my house, we have significantly reduced plastic use by using reusable water bottles, canvas shopping bags, and laundry pods instead of liquid detergent bottles. Through my practice of sustainable living, my husband is now eating a plant-based diet like me. I never thought I would live to see the day!

Support Conservation Efforts
Get involved in local conservation initiatives or support organizations that work towards environmental protection. Participate in community clean-up events, plant trees, or volunteer your time to promote sustainable living practices. Some of my favorite conservation organizations are:

Practice Mindful Consumption
Before making a purchase, consider the product's lifecycle and environmental impact. Choose durable items that can be repaired rather than disposable ones. Opt for second-hand or upcycled products whenever possible.
In today’s world, the impact of our consumption habits on the environment has become increasingly apparent. Every choice we make, from the products we buy to the food we eat, can contribute to sustainability or perpetuate environmental degradation. Practicing mindful consumption is not just about being aware of these impacts but actively seeking ways to minimize them.

Foster a Sustainable Mindset
Lastly, embrace sustainability as a lifestyle rather than a trend. Recognize that every action, no matter how small, contributes to a more sustainable future for future generations. Be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress along the way.
Be the change you want to see today and tomorrow.
Be a role model for younger generations by teaching them sustainability and conservation so they can apply this knowledge in their and their children's lives.
Be mindful of every purchase made. Think:
Where did this come from?
What was used to make this?
Is there an alternative to this purchase?
Is this something that I want or something I need?
